At Home, Where the Story Begins

There is something especially meaningful about photographing a maternity session at home. Leah’s session was one of those evenings that felt slow, intentional, and full of anticipation — the kind of session that reminds me why documenting this season matters so much.

Instead of meeting at an outdoor location, I went to Leah and her husband Coalie's home to capture this chapter where it’s already unfolding. Shooting in a client’s home adds such a personal layer to the images. The light coming through their own windows, the quiet corners they pass every day, the nursery that’s slowly coming together — it all tells a deeper story than any styled backdrop ever could.

Modern Motherhood & Meaningful Details

One of my favorite things about Leah’s session was her outfit choice. She wore jeans — which, if you’ve been following maternity trends lately, you know is having such a moment right now. The elevated-casual look feels effortless and modern. There’s something so powerful about pairing denim with a growing bump; it’s relaxed but confident, simple but strong. Leah absolutely embodied that balance. The look allowed her to feel like herself while still highlighting the beauty of this season.

We spent part of the session in their baby’s future bedroom, and those images might be some of my favorites. The room was filled with soft light and that unmistakable “almost ready” feeling — a crib waiting patiently, tiny clothes tucked into drawers, and the quiet anticipation that hangs in the air before a baby arrives. Photographing Leah in that space felt sacred in a way. It’s the room where lullabies will be sung, where late-night feedings will happen, where first smiles will be witnessed. Capturing her there, standing in the middle of it all, felt like documenting the very beginning of those memories.

Memories, Made new

We also incorporated heirlooms that made the session deeply personal. Coalie brought out his own baby blanket, and photographing them holding it together was such a tender moment. There’s something incredibly meaningful about weaving pieces of the parents’ childhood into the story of their child. It’s a quiet reminder that this baby is part of something bigger — a continuation of love that’s already been lived and carried forward.

Leah also included her childhood bunny stuffed animal, which added the sweetest nostalgic touch. Seeing her cradle that little bunny against her bump was such a full-circle moment. The toy that once comforted her as a child now sits on the edge of becoming part of her baby’s world. Those small details are the kinds of things that transform a maternity session from simply “beautiful photos” into legacy images.

This session was gentle, intimate, and full of heart. From the comfort of their home to the sentimental pieces woven throughout, every part of it reflected who they are and the love they’re already pouring into this next chapter. It was such an honor to document these moments before their world shifts in the most beautiful way.
